In the winter of 2013, I took a road trip with my mother and older brother to the Great Salt Lake in Utah. He was in the early stage of Alzheimer's disease, which made this family trek incredibly poignant. This photograph was taken with my brother at my side. He was fumbling with his camera. Once an avid photographer, I was stunned to realize during this trip that he had completely forgotten how to use his camera. Our grandmother had been a photographer too. I was thinking of their brilliant spirits as I lifted the camera to my eyes to behold this remarkable image. So, I positioned my camera and with a familiar click I framed and captured this moment in time forever. Looking out across this breathtaking expanse reminds me of the spirit of place and the spirits of people I have been blessed to have known.
